Counteracting the Retarding and Inhibitory Effects of Strong Ultraviolet on Fucus Eggs by White Light

چکیده

1. Strong dosages (20,000-50,000 ergs per mm.(2)) of ultraviolet light, predominantly of the wave-length 2537 A, greatly retard and inhibit the development of rhizoids in Fucus eggs irradiated at about 8 hours after fertilization. 2. If white light shines on the eggs after the irradiation by ultraviolet is terminated, the white light causes a considerable degree of recovery from the retarding and inhibiting effects. 3. If strong white light shines on the eggs during the ultraviolet irradiation, its effect is even more marked in protecting the cells from the damaging effects of the ultraviolet.

The effect of visible light on the carcinogenicity of ultraviolet light.

Several investigators have reported that white light will counteract the effects produced in lower organisms exposed to ultraviolet light. Whitaker (14) has observed that the inhibitory effects of ul traviolet on fucus eggs could be counteracted by white light. Kelner (6)-has demonstrated spectac ular recoveries of various micro-organisms in activated with ultraviolet. Blum and Matthews (3) hav...

The Effect of Unilateral Ultraviolet Light on the Development of the Fucus Egg

1. When Fucus eggs which have been fertilized for a sufficient length of time are irradiated unilaterally with monochromatic ultraviolet light (lambda2804 A) of adequate dosage, 97-100 per cent form rhizoids on the halves of the eggs away from the source of radiation (see Figs. 1 and 2). 2. The responsiveness of the eggs increases gradually after fertilization and does not reach a maximum until...

Effects on White Leghorn Hens of Constant Exposure to Ultraviolet Light from Insect Traps1,2

Constant exposure of Hy-Line W-36 White Leghorn hens to ultraviolet light from insect traps resulted in no significant differences in egg production, fertility, hatchability of fertile eggs, or total hatchability. Also, there were no apparent effects on the eyes of the birds. Results were the same when either blacklight or blacklight blue tubes were used. The need for additional testing of lig...

Photoreactivation of Ultraviolet-irradiated Escherichia Coli, with Special Reference to the Dose-reduction Principle and to Ultraviolet-induced Mutation.

A sufficient dose of ultraviolet light (2,0537 A) inactivates most microorganisms. Exposure of inactivated cells to suitable visible light results in the recovery of a large portion of the cells from their otherwise fatal ultraviolet-induced injury. The discovery of light-induced recovery (Kelner, 1949) and its confirmation for bacteriophage by Dulbecco (1949) gives us fresh hope for solving th...

The Accelerating Action of Illumination in Recovery of Arbacia Eggs from Exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation

Light of wave lengths 0.30micro to 0.50micro, accelerates return of the cleavage rate of Arbacia eggs to normal, after delay by exposure to ultraviolet radiation (wave lengths 0.238micro to 0.31micro). Recovery is apparently complete. Wave lengths 0.30micro to 0.50micro have no effect on the cleavage rate of normal eggs, nor does such illumination previous to dosage with ultraviolet radiation i...
